Beaver Dam Wins Civil Lawsuit Brought By Former Johnny’s Lounge Operator

(Beaver Dam) The city of Beaver Dam has prevailed in a civil lawsuit filed by the former operator of Johnny’s Lounge. Amanda Hammen sued the city for not renewing her liquor license following a series of incidents, some of which resulted in points being assessed against the bar under the city’s Demerit Point Ordinance for liquor license violators. Early last year, the Beaver Dam Administrative Committee recommended a 15-day suspension of the liquor license. The matter was being appealed at the circuit court level when the city decided not to renew the license. Five incidents were cited by the city for the non-renewal, three of which had resulted in demerit points assessed against the Madison Street tavern. The incidents ranged from serving underage patrons to closing time fights to overserving that resulted in vehicular homicide. Attorneys for the bar contended that the reasons for non-renewal were allegations that had not been proven in a court of law. In the summer of 2019, the bar re-opened under new management. Mayor Becky Glewen praised the work of City Attorney Mary Ann Schacht aMonday night’s council meeting.
