Beaver Dam School District Hoping To Start 2022-23 School Year Early

(Beaver Dam) The Beaver Dam School District is hoping to get kids back in the classroom earlier than is allowed by the state. The school board this week approved a resolution asking the Department of Public Instruction for a waiver exempting Beaver Dam from waiting until September 1 or later to begin school.

The action would be for the 2022 school year, not the upcoming school year. If approved by the state, classes would start on Monday, August 29, 2022. The school board also approved a calendar with a September 1 start date as a “backup.”

Superintendent Mark DiStefano says the move is needed to address negative impacts on education stemming from the pandemic. The school board’s Joanne Tyjeski applauded the change, noting it would give students one full week of school to begin the year instead of an abbreviated week.

The rest of the calendar would not be impacted with winter and spring break unchanged and the total number of student contact days and staff contract days remaining the same.
