2/14/17 – The Beaver Dam School Board last night approved changes to a pair of co-op agreements with their boys swimming and girls hockey programs. The boys swimming team began co-oping with Randolph in 2009 but the numbers have been dwindling. Athletic Director Melissa Gehring, who noted last night that the program produced a state champion from Beaver Dam, says the only path to keeping the program is for Beaver Dam and Randolph to swim with Wayland Academy. Practices will take place at Wayland’s pool though competition could move to Beaver Dam’s home pool at the YMCA of Dodge County. Wayland has an independent program and the Beaver Dam boys would swim under the Wayland name. However, if the co-op transitions to the Badger North Conference the following year, a new name would be needed. The girls hockey team was established as a co-op in 2008 with Dodgeland, Columbus, Wayland and Randolph though is currently only comprised of Beaver Dam girls. The co-op approved last night merges Beaver Dam with the Waupun / Fond du Lac Warbirds to form a brand-new team with a new name. No word yet on where practice would be but there are ice skating facilities in both Fond du Lac and Beaver Dam. The agreements are two-year, non-binding contracts. Co-op programs were created by the WIAA to provide students an opportunity to participate in sports that their home schools could not support either financially or due to a lack of participation.
