(Beaver Dam) The Beaver Dam School Board approved the boys swim team co-op with Horicon at a recent meeting. The current co-op agreement with Wayland Academy expires at the end of the year. Athletic Director Ryan Gerber says he is looking at this as an opportunity rather than a tough situation.
“This provides our kids with an opportunity to join a conference, which they’re currently not in. They’re an independent swim team,” says Gerber. “So, they’d be joining the Badger Conference, which gives them a schedule that’s consistent and with teams our size.”
Gerber says this would also give them an opportunity to compete throughout the winter because Wayland does not offer swimming due to scheduling conflicts. He adds that the goal of this co-op is to develop and align with the Dodge County Sea Dragons swim team at the YMCA of Dodge County.
“When I talked to this board last year with the girls’ program, this was a partnership with [Sea Dragons Head Coach] Lauren [Alston] I really sought out,” Gerber says. “It didn’t necessarily work out with her coming up to the high school given her job responsibilities. However, her and I are conversing [pretty] regularly and trying to get that pipeline moving so that we can not only build our sport, but then improve our teams.”
Gerber says that the Horicon school board has approved not only a boy’s co-op, but also a future co-op with the girls. Horicon currently does not have a swimming program.
