Beaver Dam Police Share Details About Unplanned Plane Landing

(Beaver Dam) Members of the Beaver Dam Police Department provided some insight into last month’s unplanned plane landing in the city. The incident happened around 4:45pm at the soccer fields at Commercial and Woodland Drive on July 22nd, near the planned Department of Public Works site.

Lieutenant Jeremiah Johnson says he cannot speculate much on the cause because the case is still under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board. He did share that dispatchers entered the call to respond as an “accident” but when additional call notes came in, Johnson soon realized that it was a plane downed in the middle of a soccer field.

Johnson says the pilot was already on the line with dispatch and relayed that there were no injuries, that the plane was on the ground safe, and there was some property damage. He says this helped law enforcement arriving on scene know that it was not as severe as it could have been.

Johnson says the plane’s engine did catch fire and the pilot could not get it started again. The pilot picked the soccer fields because it was an ideal landing spot. Johnson says when the plane landed it struck (quote) “a goal post, a light pole, and – believe it or not – a port-a-potty.”

Johnson says thankfully…no one was in the port-a-potty at the time but noted that it would have made for quite the story.
