12/6/17 – Beaver Dam Police Chief John Kreuziger is applauding action by the city council this week that allows his department to donate orphaned bicycles to charity. Kreuziger told the city’s Police and Fire Commission Tuesday night that the traditional method of auctioning of unclaimed bikes was not cost-effective. He says the Saturday auctions required four staffers working overtime and some bikes would only sell for a dollar or two. On Monday, the common council approved a change in city ordinance that allows the department to give the bikes to a local non-profit. In 2015, the city council eliminated a $3 fee to register bikes and while Kreuziger says the program has been successful there are still around 50 unregistered bikes on average recovered each year.
