Beaver Dam Police Say Porch Pirating Is Year Round Issue

(Beaver Dam) The Beaver Dam Police Department are warning citizens of porch pirates. A porch pirate is a criminal who will steal packages left by delivery services on the porch of a residence. During a recent appearance on WBEV’s Community Comment, Officer Tony Karel says this is a year round issue which tends to increase around the holidays.

Sergeant Jeremiah Johnson says porch pirating is the new wave of shoplifting. He says now that most shoppers are shifting towards online ordering, there are more packages sitting on front porches.

Karel has a suggestion for people who ordered an expensive item and know they will not be home when it will be delivered. He says to reach to a friend or family member to be around to accept the package and can place it in a safe location.

Johnson says when ordering, a person can specify locations where the delivery service can drop off their package and ask for it to be placed in a concealed area. The criminal act is considered a theft which is usually charged as a misdemeanor but if the object stolen costs more than $2,500 it would be a felony.
