(Beaver Dam) Beaver Dam Mayor Becky Glewen took a moment to single out the hard work of City Forestry Supervisor John Neumann during this week’s common council meeting. The accolades came while Glewen read a proclamation designating Friday, April 20 as Arbor Day in the city. Beaver Dam has been designated as an official Tree City by the National Arbor Day Foundation for the past 27 years. Glewen thanked Neumann for the role he and his department has in maintaining a healthy urban forest. She called Neumann a “visionary.”
The common council this week also accepted a $500 donation from Jonas Zahn of the Northwoods Casket Company to help replenish the city’s tree nursery. Zahn also took a moment to recognize the efforts of the Forestry Department. He cited the city’s efforts in keeping the impact of the tree-killing Emerald Ash Borer at a minimum while city’s around Wisconsin like Sheboygan and Oshkosh have been hard hit. Zahn applauded the plan put in place in Beaver Dam and commended Neumann for his tireless efforts adding that he hopes Neumann “never retires.”
While today is Arbor Day, Beaver Dam’s official Arbor Day tree planting will be held Saturday during the city’s Earth Day Celebration which is being held one day before Earth Day. The tree will be planted at 9:15am on Washington Street, which is behind the police station.
