Beaver Dam Family Center Competing In Nationwide Competition For Pro LED Lights

(Beaver Dam) A local ice skating rink is hoping to win a contest that has a grand prize of a $50-thousand-dollar LED lighting system. The Beaver Dam Family Center is competing against 32 other communities for the American Hockey League’s Light Like The Pros promotion. The Family Center currently has 53, four-foot light fixtures above their rink along with various eight-foot fixtures throughout the rest of the facility.

The Family Center opened in 1984 and is home to the Beaver Dam Hockey League and the Swan City Ice Skaters. The original lighting was replaced ten years ago with a low-interest loan from Alliant Energy that Family Center Manager Jim Szopinski says paid for itself with energy savings. Szopinski the lights are starting to show their age. He says the new upgrade would definitely bring savings though exactly how much has not yet been calculated. If the effort is not successful, Szopinski says they will have to include a lighting upgrade in the rinks ten-year maintenance plan which is currently being assembled.

The semifinals of the Light Like The Pros promotion ends this Friday and the top ten facilities will then go on to compete through March 2. The top four will square-off between March 5-and-March 18 with the winner announced on March 20. As of 8am Wednesday, Beaver Dam had 3023 votes, trailing behind an ice-skating rink in Sunbury, Pennsylvania (4252) and recently moving ahead of Stockton, California (3001).
