Beaver Dam Council Approves Wording Of Fall Referendum

(Beaver Dam) The Beaver Dam Common Council Monday night approved the wording of a binding referendum that will appear on the November ballot seeking to fund a half dozen new positions in the fire department. The hirings are the conclusion of a staffing study that also recommends the construction of a northside substation, which is not be part of the referendum.

The wording of the referendum begins (quote) “Under state law, the increase in the levy of the city of Beaver Dam for the tax to be imposed for the next fiscal year is limited to 2.118-percent, which results in a levy of $11,175,555.” The referendum then goes on to ask (quote) “Shall the City of Beaver Dam be allowed to exceed this limit and increase the levy for the next fiscal year and on an ongoing basis for the purpose of hiring six (6) new fire department personnel by a total of 4.363-percent, which would result in a levy of $11,663,159 dollars.”

The impact for property owners is estimated at $44-per $100-thousand dollars of assessed value.
