(Beaver Dam) The Beaver Dam School District Wall of Fame Committee has announced their latest Friends of Education and Outstanding Alumni. Class of 1972 graduate Mark Malak is being recognized as Outstanding Alumni for his imprint on the country music industry.
Malak’s love of Western Swing music led him to self-teach himself the basics of the steel guitar, soon growing his reputation as an excellent musician with performances alongside local bands, where he adopted his stage name of Eddie Rivers. After joining the Grammy-winning Western Swing Band, Asleep at the Wheel, Malak recorded over 30 albums and toured nationally as well as internationally playing at large stadiums and theaters. Malak was inducted into the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame in 2015 along with other members of Asleep at the Wheel. In 2019, Malak retired as the longest running steel guitarist for the band. Three Friends of Education will also be recognized.
Nate Dassler volunteers’ countless hours to serve the youth of Beaver Dam and has been instrumental in raising funds for the Beaver Dam Scholarship Foundation.
Laura Goral has volunteered to aid underprivileged youth of Beaver Dam and constantly looks to improve the lives of children.
Breuer Metal Craftsmen from Beaver Dam is being recognized for donating materials for metal-crafting within the classroom while also offering opportunities for students through their Youth Apprenticeship program.
The Outstanding Alumni Award is given annually to a graduate of the district in recognition of the honoree’s exceptional accomplishments. The Friend of Education award recognizes individuals or an organization who have given distinguished service to the district and its students.
