The Beaver Dam High School girls swimming team is ready for another fun season in the pool. 2nd year head coach Bekah Gaumitz tells DailyDodge.com that after a summer of uncertainty it was nice to get back into the pool on August 17th for that first practice.
This year’s version of the Golden Beavers may not be big in numbers but they bring a lot of experience and leadership to the pool. Coach Gaumitz says that six of the twelve swimmers on this year’s roster are seniors and every member of the team has swam competitively before. With a group of veteran swimmers, she says that allows her to focus on more specific techniques such as turns at practice, rather than basic skills if they had a group of new swimmers.
With COVID-19, this year’s swimming schedule will only have dual meets rather than the usual mix of duals and multi-team events you would have had in a normal season. Also, with many squads in the Badger Conference shifting their season to the spring, the Golden Beavers will have the opportunity to swim in dual meets against teams they wouldn’t normally get to face head-to-head.
If possible the WIAA is going to try and schedule some sort of postseason competition for swimmers this fall. Gaumitz says that she hopes that happens to give her athletes a chance to end the season with something bigger than a dual meet. If a postseason event isn’t feasible, Gaumitz says they will still swim hard and race the clock improve their individual times.
The Beaver Dam girls swim team opens up their season on Tuesday, September 1st at Portage. Their first home meet is set for September 15th against Sauk Prairie at the YMCA of Dodge County.
