Golden Beavers Drop Tough One On Homecoming

Janesville Parker spoiled Beaver Dam’s Homecoming with a 17-14 road win on Friday night at Derleth Field.

The loud and boisterous crowd saw the visitors carry a 3-0 lead into the halftime locker-room with the first half’s only scoring coming off the toe of Parker’s Anthony Zavala via a 31-yard field goal with 1:18 left in the 1st quarter.

The Golden Beavers took a 7-3 lead mid-way through the 3rd quarter when Camron Mendoza connected with Alex Soto on a 14 yard scoring pass. Parker had the counter punch as they travel 74 yards in 13 plays and salted away 8 minutes and 23 seconds off the clock to regain the lead 10-7 on a 2 yard TD run from Griffin Davis.    It didn’t take long for BD to counter as Gabe Klatt ran 41 yards to the house pushing BD back out in front 14-10 with 8:01 to play.   The Vikings answered right back as Preston Nelson connected with Anthony Brooks on a 20-yard TD pass with 5:16 left for the eventual game winning points.

The Golden Beavers were able to drive down inside the Parker 20 yard line late but couldn’t convert a fourth down and four and turned it over on downs.

Beaver Dam sophomore Gabe Klatt carried it 33 times for 162 yards and a touchdown.  Cam Mendoza had 84 yards on 10 carries and also tossed a touchdown pass to Alex Soto.  Soto caught two balls for 32 yards.

Preston Nelson completed 11 of 15 passes for 162 yards and a touchdown to pace the Parker offense.   JJ Douglas hauled in six passes for 116 yards.

Beaver Dam (Overall 4-4, Badger Large 3-3) could have clinched a WIAA playoff spot with a win and now head to the final game of the regular season at league leader Waunakee needing a victory to secure a playoff spot.  The way the field looks right now, there is a good chance Beaver Dam would qualify for the postseason with just three conference wins.   Parker (Overall 3-5, Badger Large 2-5) travels to DeForest next Friday.
