BDFD: ‘Proper Tools and Training Prevented Tragedy’

2/8/12 – Two people escaped injury after falling into Beaver Dam Lake. Fire Chief Alan Mannel says the two Beaver Dam men were on an ice boat just before the noon hour today when the boat struck an ice heave and the two were thrown into open water on the other side of the heave. Mannel says it was probably the only open water in that part of the lake. The 56-year-old and 63-year-old men were able to get out of the water on their own but were assisted at the scene by an off-duty firefighter that heard the call and happened to be in the area. Mannel says the men were completely prepared for the emergency with the proper equipment, including helmets and ice picks that helped them crawl back onto the ice. The pair also told Mannel that they had trained for this type of situation. He says had they not been prepared this story would not have a happy ending. Both were treated at the scene for exposure and released to the custody of their wives.
