Avian Influenza Detected At Jefferson County Laying Hen Facility

(Jefferson County) Wisconsin has its first case of highly pathogenic avian influenza since 2015. The disease was found in a Jefferson County laying hen facility. State Veterinarian Dr. Darlene Konkle says (quote) “there are nearly three million birds on this facility.” She adds that “this owner also has a couple of flocks that are nearby…so given that they are in the same system, we are looking at those closely.”

Labs are still working to narrow down which strain of the virus infected the Wisconsin flock. Commercial and backyard flock owners are being urged to do what they can to tighten bio-security measures.
