Grand Theft Auto Suspect Apprehended

8/12/14 – Authorities have apprehended the man suspected of stealing four cars in two counties while narrowly eluding capture on two separate occasions. It was initially sparked in Fond du Lac County Saturday night around 10:30pm with a car stolen from the city of Berlin. A nearly 12-mile pursuit down Highway 175 into Dodge County ended near County Highway Y and County YY. The driver fled on foot into nearby cornfields, a search was conducted but the suspect managed to elude capture. A second vehicle was taken and later recovered in the Fond du Lac County Town of Oakfield, where a third vehicle was then reported stolen.  Around 1am Sunday morning, the Dodge County Sheriff’s Department again assisted Fond du County on Highway151. The pursuit continued into the city of Beaver Dam, where speeds reached in excess of 100mph on busy roads like Madison and Spring streets but also side streets like Beaver and Lakes streets. Beaver Dam Police Detective Ryan Klavekoske says that vehicle was abandoned near Breezy Point Road as the suspect escaped a second time. Around 8pm Sunday night, a homeowner in the Dodge County Town of Trenton returned home to find that someone had broken into their residence, stolen a firearm and ammunition and also stole a vehicle that was parked at the residence. Klavekoske says based on the close proximity of the crash scene to the previous incident, it is believed to be the same suspect. Evidence was recovered from the residence and this is an open and active investigation; authorities say they do have a person of interest.

Primary Election Day In Wisconsin

8/12/14 – It’s primary election day in Wisconsin.  The statewide contests have not generated much excitement, and officials predict a 15-percent voter turnout.  The biggest item on the ballot is a three-way Democratic primary for the open attorney general’s post.  Lawmaker Jon Richards and prosecutors Susan Happ and Ismael Ozanne are running for a spot on the November ballot against Republican prosecutor Brad Schimel.  The most hotly-contested primary has been for the open U-S House seat in eastern Wisconsin, where four Republicans hope to replace retiring G-O-P incumbent Tom Petri.  State lawmakers Glenn Grothman, Duey Strobel, and Joe Leibham are running, along with retired technical college instructor Tom Denow.  For governor, Democrat Mary Burke faces long-shot opposition from Assembly Democrat Brett Hulsey — although Burke has ignored Hulsey and focused instead on trying to beat Republican Scott Walker in November.  State Senate Democrat John Lehman and activist Mary Jo Walters are running for their party’s lieutenant governor nomination.  There are also G-O-P primaries for state treasurer and secretary-of-state — but there’s been little interest, after lawmakers have stripped both jobs of virtually all their duties.  There are also numerous primaries for state Legislature and county offices.  All polls open at seven this morning and close at eight tonight.

Gibson Predicts Higher Turnout For County Than State

8/12/14 – Dodge County Clerk Karen Gibson says she does not know if there will be a higher voter turn-out for today’s primary than there was four years ago, the last time there was a contested race for Sheriff. She says in the September 2010 Republican primary for sheriff, there were about 15-thousand ballots cast, which represents around 30-percent of registered voters. This time, the primary is in August. Gibson says a lot of people are vacationing and may not even realize there is an election.  Gibson is optimistic there will be another 30-percent voter turnout in Dodge County. The state is predicting 15-percent statewide. Gibson also says she continues to receive a lot of questions about the sheriff’s race. Mainly, voters question why both of the candidates will not advance to the November election. Gibson notes that a primary is designed to nominate one candidate to represent the political party in the general election.  Because there is no democrat in the running, and barring a successful write-in campaign, the sheriff’s race will be decided today. The polls are open 7am to 8pm.

Mayville Approves Outdoor Dining Ordinance

8/12/14 – Restaurant owners can officially provide outdoor dining to their customers beginning as early as tomorrow night. The Mayville Common Council approved the new outdoor dining ordinance at Monday night’s meeting. The Main Street Outdoor Dining Zone is intended to facilitate outdoor dining in Mayville in order to create an active street scape and enhance the economic and social liveliness of Main Street. Police Chief Chris MacNeill says having a clean outline will provide a safe and fun experience for everyone. He says outdoor dining will be a plus for Mayville because it creates an atmosphere that is perfect for Mayville. However, restaurant owners must file an application and pay a one-hundred dollar fee in order to receive an outdoor dining permit.  Mayor Bob Redeker says there is a certain procedure to follow. He says they have to fill out an application, describe how many tables they will have and where they will be located. The city will review the application to determine if the proposed dining establishment will be reasonable, attractive and promote pedestrian and retail friendly energy in the Main Street corridor. The application must also allow for adequate space within the public right of way to facilitate safe circulation of pedestrian traffic. The permit is valid only between April 1 and November 1 and is expected to be renewed annually.

Groom Spends Wedding Night In Jail

8/12/14 – A groom in Manitowoc spent his wedding night in jail, for throwing a full mug of beer during an argument at a tavern.  Police said the 28-year-old man from Two Rivers was celebrating his wedding on Saturday night, and was still wearing his tuxedo, when he got into a loud spat at a bar.  Officers said he threw a beer mug against the wall, and almost hit a woman in the head — and he was said to be abusive and profane.  The bar owner called police, but the groom left before officers got there.  They later found the groom, the bride, and others in a vehicle about one a-m Sunday.  The groom was booked in jail for violating a previous probation.  He faces a possible charge of disorderly conduct.
