Beaver Dam Schools Looking To Expand Online Offerings
8/1/15 – The Beaver Dam School District has had success in its initial effort to offer more of its courses online. The Virtual Academy stems from the districts new strategic plan, which lays out objectives in a variety of areas and plots out a roadmap to achieve the goals. Superintendent Steve Vessey says the district has successfully completed all of the key performance objectives that had been identified, including the cyber-offerings. There were 86 students enrolled in the summer school pilot program this year and nine are currently signed up for the 2015-16 school year. The cap for the full grades nine-though-twelve curriculum this fall and spring is 12 students. Vessey says the feedback from summer school has been outstanding, with students succeeding at a high rate. Parents have enjoyed the flexibility to go on summer vacation without having their child miss classroom time. The academy is currently available to high school students but Vessey says the program may be expanded in coming years to include middle school students. The establishment of a charter school is also possible. Initially, the virtual academy is being offered to students who live within the Beaver Dam School District but Vessey says in the future students from other districts make be able to “open enroll” into the program.
