(Wisconsin) If you are going to be out riding your ATV or UTV this winter, be sure to stay on posted trails. That message from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources who encourages the public to not ride where you are not wanted this winter. DNR Warden Jake Holsclaw says that means staying off designated snowmobile trails.
“There are some trails that are basically open year round to all different forms of recreational vehicles, but you kind of got to check with your local county to make sure that it’s okay to drive on them.”
Many snowmobile trails run through private property, and ATVโs or UTVโs may not be allowed. Holsclaw says that also goes for streets, which can present challenges for off road vehicles.
“Make sure it’s a legal road to operate on. And then just like a motor vehicle, things get slippery out there. Sometimes you have ice or maybe just a little bit of snow on the roadways. So people got to use caution then too.”
Beaver Dam officials did adopt an ordinance over the summer permitting ATVโs and UTVโs on city streets only. The DNR also urges riders to wear helmets and use all safety equipment including seatbelts.
