(Fox Lake) The details surrounding the trial of a Fox Lake murder suspect were discussed during a hearing Thursday. Laverne Ware Jr. appeared in court alongside his new attorney’s Aneeq Ahmad and Jennifer Severino who filed additional arguments in regards to several motions that required the judge’s approval before the case could proceed.
District Attorney Kurt Klomberg said the new filings were done as late as possible and called the process (quote) “sloppy” and an attempt further delay the hearing. He said no discussions can be had until his staff examined the documents. A three hour recess was granted to allow for further review of the filings. After re-convening, the type of evidence that will be allowed into the trial was deliberated.
Most of the talks centered upon whether to include evidence surrounding Ware’s former attorney who wrote check’s to witnesses at the defendant’s request. Klomberg said the act shows guilt and an attempt to cover up the crime. The defense argued that the sums were specific payments and most went to family members, adding that there is not enough proof to suggest they were bribes.
Discussions also centered on Ware’s mother, Marjorie Jones, who was sentenced in March to six years in prison for aiding her son in the alleged murder. The defense believes there is enough evidence to suggest she could be a suspect in the crime. They referenced the fact that she had access to the murder weapon and was at the scene before, during and after the crime was committed.
Klomberg disagreed and said that the circumstantial evidence does not point to Jones as a suspect. Judge Brian Pfitzinger will make his ruling on the items discussed yesterday at a later date. A motion hearing is scheduled for September 19. The 38-year-old Ware is accused of murdering his girlfriend and first cousin, Sesalie Dixon, in December of 2016. The 27-year-old was found in the cab of Ware’s pick-up truck inside a Fox Lake garage with a gunshot wound to the head.
