Dodge County Sheriff Talks Citation Revenue

(Juneau) The revenue that is generated from municipal speeding tickets goes to the state. Dale Schmidt gives some insight into some of the “buckets” the money goes into.

“We have a crime lab surcharge. So, those funds go to the crime lab in Madison to process the drug testing process. We have a justice information surcharge, which is our system that we use to access drivers’ license records, and things like that,” Schmidt says, “Court support services, there is a surcharge. There is a surcharge for circuit court cost, for running the circuit court costs.”

Other surcharges include a jail surcharge, which is used to improve the jail and life for inmates. Schmidt says the sheriff’s office doesn’t receive any revenue from writing tickets.

“You’ll notice none of them say ‘law enforcement surcharge,’” Schmidt says. “So, the sheriff’s office or local PD do not see revenue from citations at all.”
