The Mayville High School football team squares off with Aquinas this afternoon in the WIAA Division 4 State Championship Game at Madison’s Camp Randall Stadium.
It’s the 2nd straight year these teams have met in the state title game, with Aquinas coming away with a 28-26 win last season.
“They are very similar from a year ago. They are very balanced rushing and passing. They’ve been relying more on the run lately just like they did last year. They cause a lot of problems for you.” Cardinals head coach Scott Hilber told 1430 ESPN Beaver Dam. “You just have to come in and be your best. I feel that we are a more athletic team than we were a year ago and we challenged our guys to say hey, don’t take a back seat to anybody in terms of athleticism. “
Coach Hilber says that his squad knows it’s a special accomplishment to appear in back to back state title games. “It’s a none in a lifetime opportunity for a lot of people and these guys have an opportunity to do it a second time and I hope that they appreciate it’s not by accident. This was a result of a lot of hard work and a lot of dedication.”
Today’s D4 State Championship game is set for 4pm.
