Marshall Football Looking To Repeat As Eastern Suburban Champs

The Marshall High School football team looks to get back to some normalcy as they prepare for the 2021 season.

The 2020 campaign was anything but normal as the Cardinals worked their way through a season where they had to bus to Fall River to practice and had to play all road games because of Dane County COVID-19 protocols.

“I had to remind our coaching staff that our freshman haven’t played football in almost two years.” Head coach Matt Kleinheinz told DailyDodge.com. “Our sophomores really haven’t done a big, combined practice like we are used to.  So there is a pretty big learning curve.  Our juniors and seniors kind of know what things used to be, but our sophomores and freshman don’t.  So I had to remind the coaches that we had to be patient with these younger kids as we get into the groove here. “

Despite all of the adversity off the field, Marshall was hugely successful on the field, finishing the regular season at 6-0 and a perfect 5-0 in the Eastern Suburban Conference.  They dropped their WIAA Level 1 playoff game to New Holstein 20-8.

With a boat load of talent returning off of last year’s squad, including Eastern Suburban Conference Offensive Player of the Year Bryce Frank, the Cardinals look to be strong contenders to repeat at Eastern Suburban Conference champs and make a deep postseason run.  Senior receivers Cole Denniston and Canon Siedschlag were 1st team all league picks in 2020, while QB Craig Ward was a 2nd team choice.  On defense Denniston at DB and inside linebacker Erik Ayala were 1st team All-league choices while Siedschlag at DB, and Frank at outside linebacker were 2nd team picks.

“I feel like we’ve got the pieces to the puzzle.”  Kleinheinz said.  “We just all have to work together to figure out how they best fit together.”

The Cardinals open up their 2021 season on Friday, August 20th when they host Fall River/Rio.
