The Beaver Dam football team couldn’t get over the hump in a tough 26-19 loss to Mount Horeb/Barneveld on Friday night at HH Derleth Field.
The Vikings (1-2) jumped out to an early lead when Ethan Steinhoff picked off BD senior QB Carter Riesen and weaved his way 41-yards to pay dirt. Tanner Gassman ran in the 2-point conversion to make it 8-0 Mount Horeb with 10:27 left in the 1st quarter. The Vikings extended their lead to 14-0 with just 2:29 left in the half as Bo Schult punched it in from 1 yard out. The 2-point try was no-good.
Beaver Dam got right back into the game as Riesen capped off a 10-play drive by hitting Wesley Biel on a seven-yard TD catch with just :37 seconds left in the half. The extra-point was wide left, leaving BDHS down 14-6.
Mount Horeb-Barneveld gave the football right back to the Golden Beavers as Nate Abel picked off Steinhoff and returned it to the Viking 49. Riesen then connected with Biel on a 47 yard pass play down to the two-yard line. After a penalty, Riesen ran into the endzone on the final play of the half, leaving Beaver Dam down just 14-13 at the break.
Mount Horeb extended their cushion to 20-13 with 1:50 left in the 3rd when Tyler Buechner scampered 30 yards to the endzone. The 2-point try was again unsuccessful
Jaden Barstow kept the Beaver Dam hope alive with a 39-yard run around the right side, but the extra-point was blocked, leaving the Golden Beavers trailing by one point again.
Buechner scored again from one yard out with 6:36 left in the fourth quarter to extend the Viking lead to 26-19.
Beaver Dam had a pair of chances late, but saw two drives stall inside the 20-yard line after the defense gave them a chance to tie or possibly take the lead.
The Golden Beavers outgained Mount Horeb-Barneveld 278-196 on the night. Carter Riesen completed 19 of 30 passes for 207 yards, 1 TD and 1 interception. Barstow ran it 11 times for 51 yards and a TD. Nate Abel caught six passes for 91 yards while Wes Biel had five catches for 87 yards and a TD.
Tyler Buechner paced the Vikings with 26 carries for 122 yards and two TDs.
