10/17/17 – The Beaver Dam Operations Committee last night approved the creation of a wheel tax. Operations Committee Chair Robert Ballweg says the matter of having a per-vehicle fee should be up to the whole council for consideration. Alderman Mick Fischer voted against the fee advancing out of committee saying that his constituents did not elect him to raise taxes. The proposal would impose a $20 tax on each vehicle in the city, which is estimated to bring in around $300-thousand dollars annually. That would be enough to sealcoat eight miles of streets or fund eight blocks of mill and overlay projects or pay for two blocks of complete street reconstruction. If approved by the common council next month, the city would open discussions with the state Department of Transportation to impose a fee on automobile and truck registrations for vehicles weighing 8000-pounds or less.
