- 10/12/17 – The ribbon was cut Thursday at the first Blue Zones-approved boarding school in the world. Wayland Academy received dual recognition as both a Blue Zones restaurant and a Blue Zones school. The Wayland cafeteria, which serves the public during special events, was recognized for its commitment to from-scratch cooking over the past 15 years. In addition, the cafeteria removed salt shakers from tables, served 100-calorie dessert portions and repositioned healthier options – including Blue Zones inspired entrees – to the front of the service line. To become a Blue Zones Project-approved school, Wayland incorporated nutrition education into daily lesson plans outside of health class. Weekend mentor outings allow students to cook in a mentor’s home. In addition, Wayland has an alternative athletic program to fulfill physical education requirements that has students participate in over 525 minutes of physical activity every week. Blue Zones Project is a community-led, well-being improvement initiative designed to make healthier choices easier by encouraging simple changes to environment, policy, and social networks.
