Waupun Police Bolster Training Incentive For New Hires

(Waupun) The Waupun Common Council this week established a rate of pay for police officers in training. Waupun Police Chief Scott Louden says the rate will be $15.13 an hour which equates to 60-percent of the starting wage and will be given to officers while they attend a police academy. Louden says the training rate is funded by the state and says that the academies will be reimbursed. The pay will only be given to officers who pass their courses and the officers will still be able to accrue benefits during their time at an 18-week tech school program. Louden says prior there had been no training pay rate which proved to be a factor when it came to filling vacant positions within the department. He says only 18 individuals applied for their most recent job opening and no person made it through the hiring process. Louden says the move aligns the Waupun Police Department with other agencies from across the state. He says it will also double the number of qualified applications they get for open positions.
