Waupun Inmate Pleads Insanity In Staff Stabbing

9/9/17 – A Waupun Correctional Institution inmate accused of stabbing a corrections officer entered a plea of not guilty by reason of mental defect during a status conference yesterday in Dodge County court. In May, Daniel Pickett entered a plea of not guilty to a half dozen felony counts including Battery by Prisoners, Strangulation and Suffocation, and Bail Jumping, all as a repeat offender. Judge Martin DeVries yesterday allowed Pickett to withdraw that plea and a psychological evaluation was ordered. In November, the 23-year-old allegedly attacked the officer who entered a cell to turn on a light, locked the door, wrapped his arm around her neck, and stabbed her 22 times while she reached for her pepper spray. If convicted on all charges, Pickett faces up to 45 additional years in prison.
