Waupun Inmate Appears On Inmate Attack Charge

9/27/17 – A Waupun Correctional inmate accused of beating a fellow prisoner unconscious made his initial appearance in Dodge County court yesterday. Jonathan Massey is charged with felony Battery By Prisoner and Substantial Battery, along with Sir Jordan Cosby, for the June incident. Cosby is accused of repeatedly punching another inmate in the face with a closed fist as he laid on the ground. Cosby reportedly backed away when ordered by guards. That’s when Massey began kicking the victim in the face with the bottom of his boot before he was subdued. The victim was taken to Waupun Memorial Hospital where he was stabilized before being sent to UW Hospital in Madison for treatment. The inmate says he was walking to the showers and the next thing he remembered was waking up in the hospital. No motive was listed in the criminal complaint but Massey was reportedly overheard saying (quote) “that was for my brother” immediately after the beating. The 26-year-old suspects each face up to an additional 17-and-a-half years in prison if they are convicted. A signature bond for Massey was at $1000 dollars yesterday and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for October 12. Cosby’s will make his initial appearance tomorrow.
