(Waupun) A residential home in Waupun sustained heavy smoke damage Monday from a stove top that caught fire. Crews responded to 408 McKinley Street just after 4am to find the kitchen appliance ablaze and were able to put it out with a water extinguisher. Property owner Tyler Laufer returned home earlier in the morning to find the structure full of smoke and called emergency services. Waupun Fire Chief BJ DeMaa says as firefighters checked the home they discovered the fire had used up much of the available oxygen before almost going out on its own. In addition to the smoke damage, the kitchen-area sustained fire damage as well. No firefighters were hurt during operations which took roughly two hours. Although despite lifesaving efforts, a dog did succumb to injuries sustained in the fire. Assisting at the scene was the Waupun Police Department and Lifestar Ambulance. The cause of the fire remains under investigation and damage estimates have yet to be determined.
