UW Band Director Mike Leckron’s Seamstress Also Retiring

(Beaver Dam) A Beaver Dam woman who has provided the colorful jackets for longtime UW Band Director Mike Leckrone for decades will be joining him in retirement. Lois Levenhagen has done alterations for the varsity band since her daughter played in the ensemble in the early 1990’s. Since that time, she has created several of the outfits that Leckrone wears during the spring performances at the Kohl Center. Levenhagen says she is not surprised Leckrone is stepping down after 50 years at the university.

Levenhagen says she puts around 80-to-100 hours into each jacket for the spring performance which includes several sleepless nights. During a recent appearance on WBEV’s Community Comment, Levenhagen said Leckrone had a particular style he preferred each year. She says each one had to incorporate red and white or red or silver to showcase the school’s colors.

This year’s UW Madison Marching Band spring program will be the final time Levenhagen sews a jacket for Leckrone. Meanwhile, Saturday afternoon will be the last time Leckrone directs the band at Camp Randall. A game you can listen to on AM1430 WBEV streaming live at DailyDodge.com. Coverage starts at 12:30pm in advance of the 2:30pm kick-off.
