7/10/17 – The theft of items from cars continues to be a growing problem for the Beaver Dam Police Department. In the past, CD’s, GPS units, and even spare change have been targeted by juveniles looking to steal anything readily available. Now, authorities have noticed a trend towards adults breaking-in to steal items that can be pawned to support a drug habit. Beaver Dam Police Lieutenant Matt Riel told us Friday on WBEV’s Community Comment that such perpetrators search out unlocked vehicles and opened garages. City ordinance already outlaws breaking into a locked vehicle but Riel says an ordinance change being considered would make it a crime to break into unlocked vehicles. Riel says that would make it easier to address the problem on a municipal level and start building up a case for citations, or charges that can be forwarded to the District Attorney’s office.
