(Beaver Dam) The fifth annual Beaver Dam Pepper Festival is being held today at the Park Village Shopping Center. The festival celebrates the sweet, mild vegetable- or technically fruit -that originated in Hungary and its appearance in America dates back to 1912. The origin of its original name is unclear, some call it the Hungarian Pepper, but it came to be widely known across the country as the Beaver Dam Pepper. Festivals to honor the Beaver Dam pepper have been held in recent years in Milwaukee and Chicago. The local celebration features an apple-pepper pancake and sausage breakfast and a chili cook off. The Dodge County Blue Zones Project, which is a community-led well-being improvement initiative designed to make healthy choices easier, will also be on hand. Blue Zones Engagement Lead Janelle Wiebelhaus-Finger says they will have a specialty smoothie for visitors to try. There will also be entertainment from the Swingin’ Beaver’s Square Dancers, musicians Jeremiah Purdy and Elwood Lee as well as kids entertainer Mr. Steve. The Beaver Dam Pepper Festival will be held from 9am until 4pm at the Park Village Shopping Center at highways 33 and 151 in Beaver Dam. There will also be sidewalk sales and other offerings from the stores in the center.
