Texas Woman Pleads Guilty To Relationship With Beaver Dam Teen

(Beaver Dam) A Texas woman entered a no contest plea Monday to charges that she had inappropriate contact with a minor from Beaver Dam. Baylei Smotherman was found guilty of one felony count of Sexual Assault of a Child Under 16 Years of Age. Beaver Dam police were dispatched to the AmericInn earlier this month following a report that an underage person was meeting up with someone from out of state. The story unraveled after the victim’s brother informed his parents of the missing teen when he did not show up for summer school. When authorities entered the hotel room they found Smotherman and the 16-year-old boy. Upon further inspection, police found empty beer bottles and two champagne glasses near a hot tub. According to the criminal complaint, Smotherman met the victim while the two were playing the video game Fortnite. The pair continued to message each other on Facebook and the 29-year-old sent a nude photo of herself. The victim told police that Smotherman flew from Texas to Madison and then caught a ride to Beaver Dam so the two could meet up. Smotherman told investigators that she thought the boy was 19-years-old but then later admitted to knowing he was 16 and having sexual intercourse. A pre-sentencing investigation was ordered and Smotherman faces up to 40 years in prison when she is sentenced in May.
