Service Planned For Statue Designer With Dodge County Ties

2/2/17 – A memorial service is planned this spring for the Wisconsinite with ties to Dodge County who designed the famous Mary Tyler Moore statue in Minneapolis. Seventy-six-year-old Gwendolyn Gillen died last Friday at her senior living unit in Madison, just two days after the death of the 80-year-old Moore. Gillen designed the bronze statue which shows Moore throwing her hat into the air, which ended the introduction to “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” set in Minneapolis. Gillen grew up in Massachusetts – where her memorial will be — and she followed her husband on his Air Force assignments to places like Guam before moving to Milwaukee and later Hustisford. Gillen also created the bust of Michelle Witmer, who died in combat with the state National Guard — plus Gertie the Duck in downtown Milwaukee and a sculpture of veterans at the state’s Korean War memorial in Plover.
