7/30/17 – The Veterans Administration has just issued a report that spells out problems at Milwaukee’s Zablocki V-A Medical Center. The agency’s inspector general made five recommendations to improve staffing and safety in the center’s residential mental health rehab program. That was after former Army Ranger Cole Schuler died in November of 2015 from a heroin overdose less than two weeks after he entered the unit. The Milwaukee County medical examiner blamed the death on the toxicity of mixed drugs. Daniel Zomchek, who became the Milwaukee V-A’s new medical center director last year, says almost all the recommendations have been carried out with more staffing and security, plus 70 more surveillance cameras.
