Regents OK “Guidepost” For Campus Free Speech With No Penalties

7/8/17 – The U-W Board of Regents has approved its own version of a campus free speech policy with none of the penalties that Republican state lawmakers want for disrupting speakers. Regents’ vice president Drew Petersen calls it a “guidepost” for campuses to honor opposing views and promoting civil discourse — without being “punitive” in scope. The Assembly voted last month on a GOP bill that calls for suspensions and expulsions of students who disrupt campus speakers more than once — with a goal of getting conservative speakers to get their say in. The Regents agreed to review existing free speech policies to assure civility.
