One Person Injured In Vehicle Vs. Train Crash

(Town of Elba) The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office say one person was injured in a vehicle versus train crash on County Highway BB south of State Highway 16/60 in the Town of Elba Friday afternoon. The preliminary investigation shows that just before 2pm a Freightliner truck towing an open trailer was traveling south on County Highway BB and was approaching the railroad crossing south of State Highway 16/60. The rail crossing gate arms were down and warning lights were flashing for an Amtrak train that was approaching from the east traveling at approximately 80-miles-per-hour. The truck began to skid and maneuver sharply to the left/east side of the track but struck the third and fourth cars of the Amtrak. There were 300 passengers and 11 crew members aboard the train, none of which were injured in the crash. The driver and lone occupant of the Freightliner sustained injuries and was transported to Columbus Hospital by Lifestar EMS. Assisting at the scene was the Columbus Fire Department and Lifestar EMS. The crash remains under investigation by the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office and the Amtrak Police.
