NOVEMBER 17TH – BAKLAVA/HOMEMADE BREAD

Homemade Bread

2 pkg. yeast (1 pkg. = 2 ¼ tsp. dry yeast)

4 ½ c. warm water

½ c. sugar

2 Tbsp. salt

½ c. melted shortening

2 Tbsp. vinegar

12 c. flour (you can use 6 c. whole wheat flour and 6 c. white flour, if desired)

In large mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Stir in sugar, salt, shortening & vinegar. Add 6 c. flour; beat well. Stir in remaining flour. Let rest 10 minutes. Turn onto lightly floured board.  Knead until smooth and satiny. Return to greased bowl; cover and let rise in warm place until doubled. Turn onto floured board and cut into 4-5 parts with knife. Shape into 3 loaves. Place in greased loaf pans. (use leftover dough for biscuits). Cover; let rise until doubled in bulk. Bake at 350° for 45-50 minutes.
