The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association is facing a referee shortage. According to the WIAA, there were over 500 fewer licensed officials last season than there was the previous year. The state is also facing a lack of young refs joining the ranks as older referees continue to retire. A part of the blame is placed on the treatment of referees, specifically from parents. A recent survey from the National Association of Sports Officials cite more than 75 percent of all high school officials say “adult behavior” is the main cause they hang up their uniform. Local referee’s Tim Haldiman and Bruce Kaufmann joined the High School OT last weekend to share their thoughts on the referee shortage. They also discuss the changes and challenges in officiating over the years. The High School OT airs Saturday mornings on 95.3 WXRO.
