Kidnapping Suspect Among Dead Following Interstate Crash

(Portage) Two people were killed in a crash while on the run from authorities in Columbia County. The State Department of Justice (DOJ) Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI), at the request of Wisconsin State Patrol, is investigating the officer involved deaths following a vehicle crash that took place on southbound Interstate-39/Highway 51 on Monday.

According to a press release, the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, Portage Police Department, and Wisconsin State Patrol were “attempting to locate and contact a vehicle believed to be carrying an individual suspected of a kidnapping attempt in central Wisconsin.” The suspect-vehicle crashed into the back of a semi-trailer at 7:48am. The driver and one passenger in the suspect-vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene.

The Justice Department is being assisted by the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office and say the Wisconsin State Patrol, Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, and Portage Police Department have been fully cooperating during this investigation. The state is continuing to collect evidence and determine the facts of this incident and will turn over investigative reports to the Columbia County District Attorney’s Office when the investigation concludes.
