Jury Trial Set After WCI Inmate Found Competent

(Waupun) A March jury trial is now on the calendar for an inmate at Waupun Correctional accused of assaulting a prison guard. Jesus Quintero pled not guilty at arraignment Monday to one felony charge of Battery By Prisoner for allegedly punching the corrections officer in September. During the hearing, results from a court-ordered exam were reviewed which found the defendant competent to stand trial. The 30-year-old was apparently upset about not being able to use the shower, charged at the guard and struck him repeatedly in the face. Quintero got into a boxing stance, was pepper sprayed and then cooperated after a brief struggle. If convicted, Quintero faces up to an additional 12 years in prison. The trial is scheduled to begin Marsh 28.
