Juneau Woman Enters Plea For After Hours Tavern Break-In

12/12/17 – A Juneau woman who bit a police officer after breaking into a Mayville tavern was in court for her plea hearing Monday. Anna Smith pled no contest to one felony count of Battery to a Law Enforcement Officer and two misdemeanor charges of Resisting an Officer and Criminal Damage to Property. A second felony charge of Burglary of a Building or Dwelling was dismissed but read into the record. Mayville Police were dispatched in July to a burglary report at Sidelines Tap on South Main Street. A witness told investigators that she saw both women damage a window and climb through to gain entry to the bar after closing time. An officer spotted two women matching the description and asked for their identification. Both women refused to provide ID and began leaving the scene. That’s when an officer attempted to handcuff Smith and she bit the officer in the arm. Pepper spray was used to subdue her. The 26-year-old faces up to 25 years in prison. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for February 16.
