Juneau Woman Arraigned For Biting Cop After Bar Break-In

8/24/17 – A Juneau woman accused of biting a police officer after breaking into a Mayville tavern was in court for her arraignment hearing yesterday. Anna Smith entered a plea of not guilty to felony counts of Battery to a Law Enforcement Officer, Resisting an Officer, and Burglary as well as misdemeanor Criminal Damage to Property. Mayville Police were dispatched last month to a burglary report after hours at Sidelines Tap at 111 South Main Street. A witness told investigators that she saw both women damage a window and climb through to gain entry to the bar after closing time. An officer spotted two women matching the description and asked for their identification. Both women refused to provide ID and began leaving the scene. That’s when prosecutors say the officer attempted to handcuff Smith and she bit the officer in the arm. Pepper spray was used to subdue her. If convicted, the 26-year-old faces up to 25 years in prison.
