Ground To Be Broken Today On Gold Star Memorial Trail

(Mayville) Ground will be broken Tuesday afternoon on Phase One of the Gold Star Memorial Trail. The ten-foot wide paved path – which will honor local fallen veterans – will initially extend two-miles from Mayville’s Theiler Park to the Horicon Marsh Visitor Center.  The effort has experienced a number of setbacks since organizers reached their initial $650-thousand-dollar fundraising goal 14 months ago. After bids went out, the original estimates came in $250-thousand-dollar above projections. The cost-overrun was trimmed to $94-thousand dollars and the county board last week agreed to use unspent 2017 funds from the parks department to make up the shortfall, ultimately saving the project. The groundbreaking will be held at 4pm this afternoon at Mayville Theiler Park. The goal is to have the trail open for use by Veterans Day with a formal grand opening dedication on Memorial Day in 2019.
