Ground Broken On Gold Star Memorial Trail Phase One

(Mayville) A groundbreaking ceremony was held Tuesday at Mayville’s Theiler Park for phase one work on the Gold Star Memorial Trail. The ten-foot wide paved trail – so named to honor local fallen veterans – will initial extend two miles to the Horicon Marsh Visitor Center, running along County Highway TW and State Highway 28. Future phases would connect to Horicon to Beaver Dam. Dodge County Land and Parks Director Bill Ehlenbeck says it has been a rollercoaster ride getting the project to where it is at today. The construction timeline for phase one work includes culvert and block wall installations in the next month. By spring, organizers plan to lay the groundwork for the trail. Over the summer months, the contractor will install the gravel base, begin the final grading process, and re-seed the area surrounding the construction work. In fall, the trail will be paved with asphalt before it becomes open for public use, which is slated for Veteran’s Day. Ehlenbeck says the project is the result of hardworking volunteers and dedicated supporters. A formal grand opening dedication is scheduled for Memorial Day in 2019.
