Fox Lake Man Charged In Coyote Theft

4/6/17 – Cash bond was set at $5000 Wednesday for a Fox Lake man accused of stealing money from Coyote Gas and Liquor in Beaver Dam on Monday. Police initially called the incident a robbery but the Dodge County District Attorney’s office charged Donald McRae with felony Theft of Movable Property. Prosecutors say the 36-year-old entered the store at 1300 North Spring Street and bought a bag of chips. When the clerk opened the register, he began punching with a closed fist in the direction of the clerk’s chest, saying “get away or I’ll start shooting.” McRae fled with around $300. He was apprehended ten hours later because of pictures of the suspect posted on social media. McRae’s parents were the one’s who identified him. His mother said she got him the red Wisconsin hat he was wearing for Christmas. They explained that McRae had a drug problem and was trying counseling but had recently asked for money to pay rent. His parents told investigators that he obtained his drugs from the Lakecrest Apartments. An officer parked nearby and after about an hour spotted his vehicle and conducted a high-risk traffic stop.  McRae allegedly admitted to police that he took money from Coyote and said that he did not initially intend to commit the crime instead “it just happened.” He did express regret saying that it was a poor decision made while he was drunk and high and added (quote) “to be honest, this is what I needed. I am glad that it happened this way.” If convicted, the charge carries a maximum sentence of ten years in prison. McRae has a preliminary hearing scheduled next Thursday.
