Former Fox Lake Guard Sentenced To Prison For Assault

(Waupun) A former officer at Fox Lake Correctional Institution was sentenced to 35 years in prison Friday for sexually assaulting three inmates over a period of several months. In May, Alex Andre Wouts of Poy Sippi was convicted by a jury of five felony counts of Second Degree Sexual Assault by Correctional Staff. In 2015, officers were told to conduct an investigation at the institution after allegations were sent to the Dodge County District Attorney’s Office.  Three inmates went into detail about the acts. A pair of one of the men’s underwear was tested and contained Wouts’ DNA.  Wouts denied the assaults, stating he would not risk his job and family by doing something like that within the prison system. Assistant District Attorney James Sempf, who tried the case, said the corrosive nature of the disparity in the power dynamic is a factor in what makes this offense so serious. Sempf added that Wouts can fairly be classified as a serial rapist. District Attorney Kurt Klomberg said in his 16 as a prosecutor he has rarely seen a colleague work as hard pursuing justice as Sempf did in this case. Klomberg agreed with Sempf’s sentiments towards the defendant and said that Wouts posed as a corrections officer to find victims. In addition to prison, the 34-year-old Wouts was placed on extended supervision for 25 years.
