(Columbus) The Columbus Fire Department battled a residential fire Thursday morning. Crews responded at 8:22am to the Benjamin Hartt residence at 222 South Spring Street, two blocks from the fire station. Fire Chief Randy Koehn says flames were shooting out of a second floor window when firefighters arrived on scene. He says the cause is under investigation but the homeowner may have been at fault. Hartt was expecting a mattress delivery and was dismantling a box spring with an electric saw when sparks ignited the cloth on the box spring and the flames quickly spread. Fire, smoke and water damage was limited to the second floor, which is currently uninhabitable though Koehn says it is not a total loss and can be repaired. There were no injuries reported. Mutual assistance was provided by the Fall River Fire Department. The scene was cleared after two hours.
