Columbia County Man Sentenced To Jail For Fatal Shooting

(Madison) In Columbia County court, a Portage man was convicted yesterday (Tuesday) in the shooting death of his neighbor during an argument this spring. Calvin Eldridge pled guilty to felony Second Degree Recklessly Endangering Safety and Endangering Safety with the Use of a Dangerous Weapon; a count of Second Degree Reckless Homicide was dismissed on a prosecutor’s motion. Responding officers found 54-year-old Victor Reynolds suffering from a gunshot wound in the doorway to his apartment. Reynolds told officers Eldridge had shot him.  Eldridge says Reynolds reached for his gun while they were struggling, so he pistol-whipped and then shot him. Eldridge will spend the next nine months in jail, with work release privileges, and four years on probation. The 49-year-old was also ordered to undergo anger management and pay restitution totaling $4800. Reynolds was also given credit for time served since the May 7th incident.
