Cause of Lakecrest Apartment Fires Undetermined

(Beaver Dam) The Beaver Dam Police Department says the causes of two fires that ravaged separate apartment complexes on Lake Crest Drive last year are undetermined. The first blaze occurred March 2nd and resulted in injuries to four people. One month later, on April 10th, fifteen people were injured when another fire started in an apartment kitchen. Police Sergeant Erik Smedema told us last week on WBEV’s Community Comment that a fire is “undetermined” when a cause of a fire cannot be narrowed down. However, the investigation remains open and can case be revisited if new information comes to light. Smedema says there is a symbiotic relationship between the fire departments during an active fire situation. He says police focus on securing the scene while the fire department focuses on putting the fire out. Smedema says once the fire is extinguished, a police investigator works with the fire chief to discuss potential causes. The Beaver Dam Police Department is then tasked with investigating the cause of a fire. In larger cases, the assistance of the State Fire Marshall’s Office is obtained.
